Having your collection as private

I was wondering why so many users on here do not have their collection open for everyone to see, i spend a lot of time admiring coins in other peoples collections and i was just curious to what their reason behind not sharing is.

I second this question. Don't see the reason to put it private. As you I love admiring other people's collections :)

Some people do not want to open this to others; not everyone is an extrovert - they just treat coin collecting as a private or personal hobby. Some others may think there is nothing to show of themselves so they prefer to keep it open at later times. At last, some people may just be unaware that it can be opened... the default is private.

In a word, security. Several members have extensive collections with considerable value.

Mine's viewable, knock yerself out friends. Anything really valuable is in my safe or at the bank, the rest is guarded by dogs, guns, great neighbors and a half Irish, half Sicilian wife. Trust me, it's better to get shot or eaten by the doggies than to cross the Helpmeet.

Thanks to our God given 2nd Amendment rights and Castle Laws we don't have to worry about break ins. We have a wide range of calibers for every day needs plus I have a small but very pleasing collection of vintage firearms, which while they are not intended for regular use can be pressed into service. I sleep very well at night.

Here's a locally circulating story to brighten your Monday -
A little old lady was driving home from Church on Sunday morning when she was pulled over for speeding. The officer, after asking for her licence and insurance, asked her if she had any firearms in the vehicle.
She replied, "Why yes Officer, I have a 9mm in my shoulder holster, a .22 in my purse, a .357 Magnum in the centre console and a .45 in the glove box."
The cop asks "Good God lady, what are you so afraid of?"
She replies "Not a damn thing."
"Yes ma'am, drive safe and have a nice day."

Security is the main one, I seem to remember there was one member who lost their entire collection and the thief left a note saying "thanks Numitsa"

If you're doing lots of swaps then you're giving out your address, there is a chance that another member who doesn't have any morals could use your address coupled with a knowledge of what you have in your collection to rip you off.

​Yeah, security is definitely a potential issue, although there's an element of "what's the point" if you keep your collection private? (I consider myself more of an introvert, but speaking as the other one here). A solution might be to not record your whole collection, or not the most valuable few coins in your collection on Numista, maybe? I know several people who do this for various reasons.

Either way, my Numista collection is all my coins I have, and if you want to you're more than welcome to take a look. I've received (more than) a few compliments on it's contents, and I don't see any reason to hide it.

I usually add some bonus coin during a swap but if the collection is not open, there is no interest to send some coins that will go directly to another swap list

In my Numista coin list, I omit most of the expensive coins. This includes most US coins and all but one gold coin, needed for Australia - colonial.

If I put all my US coins in the list, it would swamp all the other countries, and they'd probably all appear blue or green on the map.

All my good stuff is in bank vaults (3 vaults in two "cities"). My assumption is that robbing three banks is much harder than robbing my place. Note that guns are frowned upon in NY, so a home invasion robbery would be pretty easy around here.

My coin list is open . If you like to have a look, go for it.Whats on my coin list is for sale only, whats on my Swap list is for trade.

For me, its simply about privacy and security. I only care about what you want to swap, not what you dont want to swap.

Plus you can pick up a roll or two of JFK 1/2 Dollars, ATB quarters or the Presidential series!​

In other coin site there is an option to hide individual items of your collection. There is no such option in Numista. If it were available, possibly more users would show their collections.

Thanks everyone for your replies I never really thought about the security side of things! Luckily I haven’t got much worth stealing

Precious metal content is not usually the main factor in a coin's value. I'd say that most of my more valuable coins are copper or bronze.
