I would like to start non-binding pool on question of Exonumia and Tokens management. Currently, exonumia is sorted by type of the object (bullion, medals, fantasy pieces etc.) and then by country. On the other hand , Tokens are sorted by country first and then by type of object (telephone tokens, local tokens, etc.)
Question is - what do you like more? (And possibly why?) Please do not react to others, it should be just expressing your own opinion.
I think they are good enough the way they are lol
each way serves best what it is intended for
for example, fantasy issuers cannot be listed as issuers like tokens
however, what would be even better - something i have mentioned before - is to have another portal for tokens/ exonumia, something like colnect, where tokens and exonumia each has list of countries and currencies
I honestly prefer the way used for tokens, since usually you can tell the provenance (where it is from) of an item before you necessarily know what it was used for; therefore you can scroll down to the "country" and look at all the sections for that country together at once. My vote is for sorting by country, in the same way tokens does.
Hello.
Managing tokens is now easier in the token section, as they are. Exonumia is now also understandable and easy to manage and search. But if some of the categories from tokens move to the Exonumia section and they are not sorted by country, this may be not so easy.
If we need to choose, I am for Exonumia. And this is an option when we do not need to do anything (almost).
But I still ask you just to consider the option of multi-level categories.
But if I wanted to answer in person from myself, then I take into account the inevitable migration of all non-payment tokens into Exonumia, I would prefer to see them sorted by country.
I think it’s a great idea to rework the tokens/exonumia to more workable categories. I love Neil’s suggestion as it lists items by nation, which is how most people collect. I also would love to see the two sections modified to their actual definitions. Tokens are items intended to replace or substitute money. All others items (so-called dollars, tourist tokens, centennial dollars, etc) are all medals and thus actually exonumia. Writing this on my phone so I can’t really get deep into it, but I would be glad to help with any rework.
I find the Tokens section easier to navigate because of everything being listed by country. If that section was changed so everything reflect the current Exonumia style, I feel like things would get pretty chaotic. Exonumia only has six categories, but the Tokens section would have way more than that (If I counted correctly, there seems to be 30 just up to the "D" countries).
With Exonumia, I do like how everything works with listing the fantasy issuers. I find the current layout for Exonumia works for Exonumia; however, if too many more categories are going to be added to that section, it could turn pretty confusing.
Overall, I would say I like the layout of the Tokens section more.
Quote: "neilithicman"Personally I would like to see both listed as a separate section of the countries coinage.
So the New Zealand section would look like:
New Zealand Pound
New Zealand Dollar
New Zealand Trade Tokens
New Zealand Tokens
New Zealand Exonumia

Also some way to search for example "United States Transit Tokens". When you search for tokens have a sub menu open for United States, then another sub menu for transit tokens. If it was all in one search menu it would be WAY too long.
As about half of my collection are historical medals im not quite happy with the current layout.
to see Historical Medals with immense historical importance and values sometimes in the 100 thousands of dollars next to Modern Bullion and Fantasy coins is not the correct place for me.
Of course Im just an individual and only some others might see it the same as me.
If it was me I would like to see historical medals listed seperately next to tokens and exonumia.
but to be honest I don‘t have an idea how to deal with our complete Token and Exonumia sections.
Some of what we haveI don‘t like them but some do like their Coffee machine tokens, Laundromat, Harry Potter...
If you like coins, medals and tokens with ship motives follow my new instagram account with regular updates @numisnautiker
From time to time I sell some coins on Ebay make sure to follow me @apuking on Ebay.
Hello,
i tend to prefer the country first - type second option.
Mainly because it is the general logics of all our catalogue.
Both are ok and it is a subjective choice. But why sorting coins country first, tokens also, and exonumia type first ? It would be like sorting coins be metal first, or circulating, not circulating, commemos, and then countries.

That way you could get rid of the tokens and exonumia section altogether.
I also agree with this idea. Main reason is currently when trading, all the tokens and exonumia are listed alphabetically. So if you only want a certain country you practically have to hunt for your country of choice. It does make it difficult when someone has a large collection of tokens, exonumia.

The other bonus of this method is there is not just one or two referees responsible for the 30,000+ tokens and items of exonumia. Each country's referee will be responsible the the country's exonumia. It spreads the workload.

Here is where I draw the line, I have absolutely no interest in dealing with pachinko tokens, tourist medals and similar stuff. These don't interessts me, I have no expertise or knowledge about them and I have absolutely no intend to aquire it.
I am here for coins not other stuff ... then I would be on collnect

There is no need to embarrass anyone, there was no such proposal.

@Idolenz
100%, Absolutely agreed! Thanks, but no thanks, I'm afraid.
Besides, I'm fairly sure there are more than just "one or two" (master) referees responsible for tokens;
It sounds as if there are suggestions for a tokens section, medals section, exomumia section (and maybe others). The first step ought to be exactly what is meant by these words. A medal to some may be another’s exonumia. To be a “historical” medal does it have to be a certain age or just “really important?” A “token” is used by many to mean anything that is not a coin. This is especially true of those that don’t collect any of this material. So maybe defining exactly what is meant by these titles would be a good first step.

I think you're right, you have to define and divide the groups, for my humble opinion,
There are four kinds of coins;
I think we can base (with many exceptions) that the coins must have name of the territory, date and face value, from this premise we can divide into these groups
-Coins for circulation issued by states or autonomies, including colonies, possessions, regions ...
-Commemorative coins issued (For circulation or not) by independent states, including colonies, possessions, regions ..
-Coins of micronations and states or territories partially recognized by other states (For circulation or not)
-Fantasy coins, issued by private entities of real or fictitious territories
The rest are tokens or medals
I do not collect tokens or medals, although I understand that everything has a place that separates and differentiates the same
