Main line for date, sub line for varieties?

Is it possible to set up a feature so we have one line for the date in the catalogue and then sub lines for varieties? Similar to the way the countries are listed?

I ask because I went to add an 1862 Indian Rupee into my collection and was confronted by a huge stack of varieties. You need to either pick one at random or become an expert on Indian coins to be able to add anything to the collection.

Is it possible just to have a generic line for each date for the beginner collectors, and then have all the varieties as a sub-line for that date for the more advanced collectors?
