As we reach wartime on sc.rednek's Year by year thread, I thought this would be an appropriate time to introduce you to this new channel. Maybe some of you interested in the history of the 20th century have already heard of, or seen the now-famous Youtube series on WWI by the It's History team, "The Great War": https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUcyEsEjhPEDf69RRVhRh4A
It's a comprehensive history channel that details the events of WWI in real time, 100 years later, week by week; as well as putting out a bunch of special episodes, visiting museums/battlefields, and taking questions from viewers. Now they have a new channel for their series on WWII, that will also be updated in real time, week by week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP1AejCL4DA7jYkZAELRhHQ
Both are absolutely brilliant, very well-detailed, researched, and balanced channels that make very informative videos. I've been following the former since mid-1916, and I hope to introduce both channels to more viewers who enjoy learning about history; if you like unbiased, objective framing of complex historical events, and wish to avoid the increasingly rampant historical revisionism and politicisation, then I highly recommend both these channels to you.
Enjoy! (PS: hope this doesn't count as advertising! )
I'm a long time fan of the Great War series, youtube just recommended me their new channel. This is a even more ambitious project then the first one, I just hope Indy makes it through without loosing his mind.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
@cro321
Yeah, Indy's hands down my favourite host. Gotta love that waistcoat of his, too.
The WWII set looks much better than the WWI set in my humble opinion as well!
Just a little disappointing they didn't wait until 2019, when they could've done WWII 80 years in the future; instead they're releasing the episodes 79 years later.

Yeah, he's great. His performance makes an already interesting show even better.
I think they started it this year to keep the momentum going from the Great War but I agree it would have been better if it started next year for multiple reasons. There's the obvious reason of making it 80 years but there's also the concern they might overstretch and both shows loose quality, if they started it next year The Great War would have been over and they could focus only on WW2.
I'm actually very surprised they decided to cover WW2. I remember the team stating in previous Q&A sessions they wouldn't do WW2 as it's much more complex than The Great War. I'm really interested to see how they'll fit an entire weeks worth of WW2 events into a single 10 to 15 minute episode.

If they stuck with the theme of The Great War, we would've had to wait until 2039 for this series... now I'm actually curious to see what history channels will do then. Guess I'll have to wait 21 years to find out!
Thanks for the great post! I love looking for new channels to watch. I haven't seen one yet but I'll watch an episode. I find that Buzzfeed Unsolved's True Crime as well as Buzzfeed Unsolved Ruining History to be pretty fun and relates to history. They're both available on Youtube, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. True Crime is about unsolved mysteries and murders where they go through the facts of the case and then the theories.
What I collect: US, 3rd Reich Germany, Philippines, Ancients, Vatican City, North Korea.
I've also checked out those Buzzfeed vids before; sounds like you'd enjoy Drunk History on Comedy Central (also available on Youtube) as well. That one's more of an entertainment series based off history rather than investigative or analytical, so don't cite it in any papers.

Thanks. I've seen Drunk History a few times. Those types of videos are definitely for entertainment!

Reviving this thread because on this very day, one hundred years ago, the Armistice of Compiègne that ended the Great War of 1914-18 was signed, and it came into effect on the Western Front at the exact time when I posted this (11:00AM GMT+1), a century later, ending four long years of ultimately futile bloodshed and sacrifice.
Quote: "John McCrae"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Let's hope humanity has left behind that phase of our history, and that such tragic loss will never be repeated again.
They remind me of a few old DVDs I have from a BBC documentary of the same name in black and white.
I found them on amazon but originally they were 2 discs given out with a newspaper.
