At least you have the 1938KN coin where the variety exists, as opposed to 1938H where it does not. Still not sure what grained edge means, and I would call yours a security edge. The page above says security edge is standard - here is a 1938H with security edge picture as well ...

The 1938-KN West Africa 2 shillings has 2 edge types. The VERY common 'security edge', which has a double-reeded edge, with forward slashes (or back slashes?) and dots between them. The other type is Very, very rare and looks just like a US dime's or US quarter's edge and is known as 'reeded' or 'grained.' Like I stated already, its rare, so rare that I've been looking for an example (in any condition) for the past several years with no luck. So good luck to you all!
