I have wanted this half dollar for about ten years. I haven’t wanted to pay full price so I have waited.
Today I did a roof repair for someone, and when asking for payment I added, “I also accept old coins” he had this and gave it to me for $20.
What makes me sick is that he said he had a whole sack of old coins and the coin shop gave him silver value for the lot. Please note that all the coin shops in my area are crooks...
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
On one hand I'd like to see everyone educated about coin values so nobody gets ripped off my charlatans like that, on the other hand, you'll find it pretty hard to get good deals if everyone knows exactly what all their coins are worth.
Oh! That’s a nice coin at a very good price... Yes, you are right... all new collectors need to be cautious when they are dealing with small-time coin-dealers... It’s best to take a second opinion before shelling out a lot of money!
I just want to say that my experience so far with the few local dealers in my area has been positive. I read a lot of knocks on dealers here, which are probably legit, but my experience has been better.
The primary dealer I work with is always fair and regularly offers me discounts once I have decided on a few items. It could be that I am his only foreign coin collector, but I am okay with that. He also tests metals for me when I buy coins elsewhere at no charge.
