Swapping by weight or number of coins?

4 posts
Hi all! I am new to Numista, and reasonable new to the hobby, and was wondering what your opinion on swapping by weight or number of coins?

I am based in Australia, and most of my spare coins are from here. The problem is, Australian coins are HUGE! Biggest is 50c (15.55 g and ø 31.5 mm) and 2nd biggest 20c (11.3 g – ø 28.5 mm). I often fill a swap list with 20 coins only and over 300g!

Not considering the value of each coin in the swap, of course, what I want to show is that I am paying much more for postage than my fellow swapper. Do you guys consider fair ask for few more coins in order to balance the weight of both postages?

And if anyone is keen for some swap, feel free to offer me.

Regards
Diego
Welcome to Numista. I am afraid that it does depend on the coins that you are swapping. Being antipodean, you have a slight disadvantage with your postage distances and thus costs.
There might be collectors that will take mercy on you, there might be some people that just believe that is the status quo.
It is up to you, what you decide on a fair swap. Postage costs is something you'll swallow or not swallow.
