Before we get into the usual reporting of Numista's new monthly membership statistics, I would like to speak about something important. While going through the data, I noticed something highly unusual.

Normally there are about 20 new members each month who choose not to report their home country. (It used to be more than two thirds of new members, but Xavier tweaked the signup form in early 2013 to encourage national identity).

But in August 2019, it was 358 new members who did not choose a nation. That's more than the sum of similar users for the preceding 19 months put together. This is more than 15% of the new users for the entire month, a magnitude not seen in six years. What a difference from the usual pattern!

I looked deeper at the "nationless" new members for August 2019, and found another interesting pattern in the data. Of those 358 users, 336 of them (94%) joined on the same day... August 5th. Let's put that in perspective with a comparison... more nationless users joined on August 5th than did French users for the entire month! What's more, not a single one of these users added a single coin to their collection, and their users names share a strong similarity to each other.

Did Numista have a serious security breach on August 5th, 2019?
Could be spam sleeper accounts
2.348 new users joined Numista in August 2019, increasing the total member tally by 2.0%. This is the highest monthly increase in Numista's history, beating the previous record from last January.

However, if you subtract the 336 nationless members from August 5th, it falls to 2,012 new users, which is only the second highest monthly increase. It was a busy month for Numista either way.

In comparison, Numista added 1,844 new members in August 2018 and 1,496 new members in August 2017.

August's new members added 91,800 coins into their collections.

72.9% of August's new users have not yet entered a coin into their Numista collection. That's about 4% higher than normal. (Again, if you remove the nationless users from August 5th, it goes back to the usual 69%.)

1,990 of August's new members selected a nation. 115 nations had at least one new member. 436 are American, 299 are French, 202 are Indian, 156 are British, 88 are Filipino, and 72 are Canadian.

As I have already discussed, 358 users from August 2019 did not choose a nation. If you remove the nationless users from August 5th, it goes down to 19, which is closer to what I expected.

There were notable surges in memberships from France, Japan, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, and Uganda.

Afghanistan, Albania, Armenia, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina, Faso, Cambodia, Curacao, Cyprus, Ecuador, Faroe Islands, Gambia, Guadeloupe, Guernsey, Iceland, Iraq, Isle of Man, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Namibia, Oman, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe each gained one new member.

72% of August's new users belong to one of the Top Ten nations on Numista by user count (USA, France, India, UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Philippines). South Africa passed Brazil for 8th rank!

Of the top ten nations, the Philippines grew the fastest this month (5.2% increase), while Canada grew the slowest (1.5%). France grew by 1.7% and the USA grew by 2.1%.

User Participation scores for August (how many new users are actively cataloging coins):
60% Romania
56% Netherlands
44% Canada
41% Portugal, Spain
39% Belgium
38% Australia, UK
34% USA
33% France, Russia
29% Brazil
21% South Africa
18% India
9% Philippines
This August 5th There were several interferences reported in the program, due to the deployment of the modifications for the metals.

Numista underwent an unusual spammer attack on August 5th. Many users were created on that day with minimal personal data and from various IP addresses, attempting to send undesirable personal messages to Numista members. Several actions have been taken since then to help preventing similar attacks in the future.
Sorry for my faul language, but who in the fucks name with rotten brains would want to harm this community, what is the gain of it? The swapping process is so diverse (including swap lists from both sides, negotiation phase and so on), I find it hardly believable and feasible that someone could write a code, that would do automated swaps, so that multiple users would be suckered in such swaps nad would lets say send the coins to one person which would never return any coins.
LP
The spammer didn't initiate any swap. The actions were limited to opening accounts and sending personal messages.

4- Except as authorized by Numista, you can not create or have multiple accounts on the site.
With the possibility of having several collections it is probably NOT more useful to have several accounts.

Hello.
Interestingly, if there are statistics, how many members are on the French and English side of the site? Is there a way to compare this?

what do you mean by "members on the english side" ? the database of members is common
BOINC
Yes, but we can use one of the two versions of the site? And it’s interesting to see how many members use these versions.
Yes we can go from one side to another by the button 'language'
