20 mm medieval or later silver coin - no monarch's head [solved]

7 posts • viewed 195 times
Hello, everybody.

Would anyone be kind enough to identify this coin? It belonged to an old family friend, whose wife kindly passed it on to me.

It weighs 2 g to the nearest gram (this is the most precise measurement I have been able to obtain).

The diameter is between 20 and 22 mm depending on where it is measured - the coin is an irregular shape and appears to be hammered.

I presume it is silver but it might be a base metal.

On one side is the legend WVLE LAVIER IN NUR M? around a possible flower surrounded by three open crowns and three fleurs-de-lys alternating (below).

On the other side is the legend WER GOT VER TRAVT RAT around an orb surmounted by a cross (below).

My apologies if I made errors transcribing the lettering, being inexperienced. If anybody would be knowledgeable and kind enough to translate the legends as well, I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much.

With my regards,
Duncan Graham.

Thank you so much, Zac UK, that is very interesting.

It is evidently the same token - fascinating to think that it is almost certainly sixteenth century, as I see from the website of the Portable Antiquities Scheme showing another example https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/273636 that Wulf Laufer's dates are 1554 - 1601.

Thank you also for kindly translating the inscription.

With my regards,
Duncan.

Thank you, PetrusAscanus, for directing me to interesting information about the jetton, including its uses for counting money and as a playing-counter in games. It is interesting, also, that Wulf Laufer's descendants continued making jettons as late as the eighteenth century.

If objects could speak?

Thank you also for your kind welcome to the site.

With my regards,
Duncan.
