I recently won a lot in a CNG auction and the coins arrived earlier today. Unfortunately, one of them had broken inside the package...but that itself is tolerable, the coin is still alright and I have two more left intact. However, I noticed a few things that made me start to worry soon afterwards.
One thing is that the chipped coin's cross section looks grainy and very shiny, unusually white. Is this how silver is supposed to look when it hasn't been exposed and not patinated? I have another coin - from a different dealer, on VCoins - that is chipped and whose edges look powdery (but not white), so I can suppose it may be a case. Need confirmation and such, though.
Another thing is, despite their weights, they feel rather light to me. Sure, they are around 3 grams, ice melts fast on their surfaces, and I myself can't see any sign of modern forgery...but something still feels a bit off. I tried dropping them on the table and, I don't know how to word it but, none of them fell or rang the way my other drachms and denarii would (or so they seemed to me). And once I had these doubts, the details started to look a little too good, too.
The dealer being CNG, authenticity was guaranteed, and the coins are ex Rod Sell collection, although the lot was a no-return thing. I'm no professional and could be just being paranoid right now, so my worries may be wrong, and I needed some opinions on this. Do you think they are fake or genuine? Could they be fourrée, by any chance?
