Rulers of Indonesian sultanates

Could we add rulers to the Indonesian sultanates? I ahve tried putting together a list, maybe it can be used? :)

For Bangka Island I had a hard time figuring out where the coinage came from. For what I could read on the first coin’s page, the coins are from/for the local miners. Like seen with the Greenlandic mining coins..?

Banten, Demak have some years unaccounted for, before a ruler, but with a coin atached.

Because of the lack of year, I could not figure out the ruler of Siak.

I couldn't really figure out the pre-dutch rulers of the Mataram area.

That being said, I think I have covered most of the sultanates, but probably also made a few mistakes or maybe even huge mistakes, but tried my best to contribute :D

I have a soft spot for origami paper cranes.

Many genealogy of Indonesian kingdoms is not crystal cut, but local historians often preferred (even insist) on unbroken list of kings even if they got it from dubious or contradictary sources. So I think there are rulers that can be added for certain coins, and there are others that are better left unspecified since we have no definitive information anyway.

I think your list of Aceh, Banten, Batubara (part of Asahan btw), Demak, Palembang (not Palambang btw), Pontianak, and Samudra Pasai Sultanate looks good enough and can be added.

Jambi is difficult because almost all of the coins have no year nor inscription of ruler. There are some that can be reasonably assigned to a ruler but I think they are wrong in your list. If I may:

- Muhammad Syah (1696-1740)

- Sultan Kiai Gede (1687 – 1719)

N#370236 (with rulers back to Seri Ingologo)

- Pangeran Pringgabaya/Sri Maharaja Batu Johan Pahlawan Syah (1691 – 1710)

N#370280

N#370165

This was a period of internal division within Jambi following the death of Sultan Anom Ingalaga (1679 – 1687). These two rulers are actually brothers. Pangeran Pringgabaya established a breakaway court until he was apprehended, hence the overlapping date

- Istra Ingologo (1740-1770)

- Anom Seri Ingologo  Ingalaga (1770-1790)

N#107479 (with rulers back to Istra Ingologo)

N#107537 (with rulers back to Istra Ingologo)

Ingologo is variant romanization of the same name Ingalaga. Also true for Seri=Sri. Better to be consistent.

Now the problem with this coin is that there were two rulers with “Anom Ingalaga” in their regal name, Sultan Anom Ingalaga (1679 – 1687) and Sultan Ahmad Zainuddin Anom Sri Ingalaga (1743 – 1770). Keep in mind however, Jambi rulers have multiple regal names and generic component of anom and ingalaga could be attached to other sultans. But let us pretend these two candidates are the most likely. If we look at the history of Jambi (see Barbara Andaya's 1993 To Live as Brothers), Jambi's ability to mint coins is based on its economy and the economy declined quite severely since the final years of Sultan Ingalaga’s (1679–87) reign. This was further exacerbated by his feuding heirs and the sultanate became an economic backwater further on. If it were me, I would assigned this coin to the former Anom Ingalaga rather than Zainuddin Anom Sri Ingalaga. But you can see there is a lot of guesswork here and since there is no authoritive catalogue to reference, I would left it without rulers.

The rest of Jambi coins are better left without rulers.

City of Madura and City of Sumenep is not part of Sultanate of Mataram afaik. They are their own Sultanate of Sumenep based on Madura island, no where near Mataram area around Yogyakarta. I could not think a ruler to be assigned here yet.

Additionally, you reference of Jambi rulers is exactly what I meant of simplistic genealogy without source. I've made a different list in Indonesian wikipedia which is actually base on a history book:

https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kesultanan_Jambi

OK, we will start with the ones where there is agreement.

…..

These rulers of these sultanates (in bold) have now been added and I am working on the others.  Thanks for your patience!

For Jambi we now have these rulers in place:

Kiai Gede (1687-1719)

Pangeran Pringgabaya (1691-1710)

Undetermined Sultan (1679-1770)

For Sumenep, I can find this list of 18th - 19th century rulers at the time the countermarked coinage is attributed (Wikipedia article:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_monarchs_of_Java

  • Suderma (1705–1707) [grandson of Yudanegara]
  • Cakranegara II (1707–1737) [son of Cakranegara I]
  • Cakranegara III (1737–1750) [nephew]
  • Bendara Saud (1750–1767) [son-in-law of Cakranegara I]
  • Tirtanegara (1767–1811) [son]
  • Natadiningrat (regent 1804–1810) [son]
  • Sultan Paku Nataningrat (1811–1854) [brother]

@by.abay if these make sense, let me know and I can implement the underlined rulers.

All seems fine to me except Undetermined Sultan (1679-1770)

which coin is that ruler designated for?

From your earlier comments on Jambi, I thought you were saying that for these two coins the ruler could not be determined:

Istra Ingologo (1740-1770)

- Anom Seri Ingologo  Ingalaga (1770-1790)

N#107479 (with rulers back to Istra Ingologo)

N#107537 (with rulers back to Istra Ingologo)

If there is a different date range that is better, or a different way to do it, let me know.

Ah right. I think assigning it to Sultan Anom Ingalaga (1679 – 1687) for now is better than having (1679 – 1710) date range

OK, I have changed that one for Jambi, and input the names for Sumenep, so I will mark this “Done.”

Thanks to all for your help!
